1. Position the Vehicles

Park close enough for the cables to reach without either car touching the other, both with engines off and handbrakes on.

2. Connect in This Exact Order

Red (positive) cable to the flat battery's positive terminal. Red cable's other end to the working battery's positive terminal. Black (negative) cable to the working battery's negative terminal. Black cable's other end to an unpainted metal surface on the flat car's engine bay — not the flat battery's negative terminal directly, which reduces spark risk near the battery itself.

3. Start the Working Car First

Let it run for a couple of minutes before attempting to start the flat car — this gives some charge transfer time.

4. Start the Flat Car

If it doesn't start after a reasonable attempt, don't keep cranking repeatedly — this can strain the starter motor. Check connections and try again after a short wait.

5. Disconnect in Reverse Order

Black cable from the previously-flat car first, then black from the working car, then red from the working car, then red from the previously-flat car.

Why the order matters: Connecting negative directly to the flat battery's terminal (rather than an unpainted metal surface elsewhere) increases the risk of a spark near the battery, which can be genuinely dangerous given the hydrogen gas batteries can vent. The order above minimises that risk.

If your car keeps needing jump-starts, don't keep repeating the process — see our FAQ: How Do I Know If My Car Battery Is Dying?
