Understanding roughly what each one does makes it far easier to follow a mechanic's explanation, or know whether a strange noise is worth worrying about.
The Engine
The engine converts fuel into motion through thousands of small, precisely timed explosions per minute inside its cylinders. Pistons move up and down, turning a crankshaft, which ultimately spins the wheels. Oil circulates constantly to reduce friction between moving metal parts — which is why oil changes are the single most important routine maintenance item; running an engine low on oil, or on old degraded oil, is one of the fastest ways to cause expensive internal damage.
The Transmission
The transmission (or gearbox) manages how much of the engine's power reaches the wheels at any given speed, using different gear ratios for pulling away from a stop versus cruising at highway speed. Automatics do this without driver input, using transmission fluid both to lubricate and to hydraulically shift gears; manuals do it through a clutch and driver-selected gears. Either way, the transmission is a precision system — its fluid matters just as much as engine oil, even though it's serviced far less often.
The Brakes
Braking works by converting your car's motion into heat through friction — brake pads clamping onto rotors (discs) at each wheel, controlled hydraulically through brake fluid. Because this is your car's primary safety system, it's designed with a wear indicator that deliberately makes noise before the pads are fully worn, so problems announce themselves before they become dangerous.
The Electrical System
The battery and alternator work together to power everything electrical — starting the engine, running the lights and infotainment, and firing the ignition. The battery provides the initial burst of power to start the car; the alternator then takes over, recharging the battery and powering everything else while the engine runs. A weak link in either component is one of the most common reasons a car won't start.
Why this matters: When a mechanic explains what's wrong with your car, most explanations trace back to one of these four systems. Recognising which system is involved helps you understand the urgency, the likely cost, and the right questions to ask.
