Pads are the friction material that clamps onto the rotor to slow the wheel. They're a wear item by design — every stop removes a tiny amount of material, and they're built with a metal wear indicator that deliberately squeals once the pad gets thin, giving you an early warning before it's a problem.
Rotors (Discs)
The rotor is the metal disc the pad clamps onto, spinning with the wheel. Rotors wear more slowly than pads but do wear over time, and can also warp from repeated hard braking or overheating — showing up as a pulsing sensation through the pedal or steering wheel. Rotors have a minimum safe thickness; below that, they need replacing rather than just resurfacing.
Calipers
The caliper is what actually squeezes the pad against the rotor, using hydraulic pressure from the brake fluid. A stuck or seized caliper is a common cause of a car pulling to one side when braking, or a pad wearing unevenly on just one side.
How They Wear Together
Front brakes generally do more of the stopping work than rears and wear faster, particularly in stop-start city driving. Pads should always be replaced in axle sets (both front, or both rear) to keep braking balanced side to side — never just the worse one.
