The Myth: "Only the Dealership Can Do It"

This is the single most persistent and costly myth in car ownership. Many drivers believe — because dealership staff have implied or stated it — that only the selling dealer's own service centre can perform logbook servicing without voiding the warranty. This isn't accurate.

What the Law Actually Says

Under Australian Consumer Law, a manufacturer cannot void your new-car warranty simply because servicing was performed by an independent workshop rather than a dealership. The ACCC has been explicit that using warranty servicing as a way to force customers back to dealership pricing is anti-competitive.
