Understanding Your Quote: Line Items Explained

Parts

The physical component being replaced, priced at either genuine (manufacturer-branded) or OEM-equivalent (suitable aftermarket) level. Genuine parts typically cost more; OEM-equivalent parts meet the same specification at a lower price point.

Labour

Time charged for the actual work, usually based on standard time estimates for that specific job on that specific vehicle — some jobs genuinely take longer on certain models due to access difficulty, regardless of the part's cost.

Consumables

Small items used in the process but not the main part itself — gaskets, fasteners, fluids topped up during the job. Usually a minor line item, but worth understanding rather than assuming it's padding.

Diagnostic Fee

The cost of time spent identifying the actual fault, particularly for issues without an obvious cause. Many workshops waive or credit this fee if you proceed with the recommended repair.

GST

Added on top of the subtotal, as required by law — worth checking whether a quoted price already includes it or not, since this affects direct comparisons between quotes.
