Diesel particulate filters (DPFs), fitted to most modern diesels, need to reach a high enough temperature periodically to burn off trapped soot — a process that requires sustained higher-speed driving. A diesel used almost exclusively for short, low-speed trips can struggle to complete this process, leading to a clogging DPF and reduced performance or warning lights.
What Helps: The Occasional Longer Drive
If your diesel is mostly used for short local trips, an occasional longer drive at higher, sustained speed (a country trip or extended highway run) helps the DPF regenerate properly — genuinely useful advice, not just a folk remedy.
Fuel Quality Matters
Diesel fuel systems, particularly common-rail injection used in most modern diesels, are precision components sensitive to fuel contamination. Sourcing fuel from reputable stations and keeping the tank reasonably full (reducing condensation) both help protect the injection system.
Oil and Filter Intervals
Diesel oil works harder than petrol equivalents due to higher compression and different combustion byproducts — following the manufacturer's specific diesel interval (which may differ from a petrol variant of the same model) matters more than it might seem.
The DPF warning light: If a DPF warning light appears, a period of sustained higher-speed driving (if safe and practical) can sometimes resolve it before it becomes a bigger issue — but a light that persists or reappears quickly needs proper diagnosis rather than repeated attempts to "drive it out."
