Usually the battery — either flat or unable to deliver enough current, often due to poor connections at the terminals. Sometimes it's the starter motor solenoid instead. A jump-start ruling the battery in or out is the fastest first step.
Complete Silence, Nothing Happens
Often a blown fuse, a faulty ignition switch, or an immobiliser fault rather than the battery — check your dashboard lights come on at all when you turn the key to the first position.
A Single Loud Clunk, Then Nothing
Classic sign of a failing starter motor — enough current is reaching it to engage, but not enough to actually turn the engine over.
Engine Cranks Normally But Won't Fire
The battery and starter are working fine here — the issue is fuel delivery or ignition (spark not reaching the cylinders). This needs a proper diagnostic scan rather than a guess.
Starts, Then Immediately Dies
Often an idle control or fuel delivery issue — the engine catches but can't sustain itself. Different again from a no-start, and usually needs a scan to pinpoint.
A trap worth knowing: A battery that keeps needing jump-starts isn't always a bad battery — a failing alternator not recharging it properly, or something drawing power overnight, can produce identical symptoms. Replacing the battery again won't fix either.
