Is It Normal for My Car to Smell Like Petrol?

The short answer: No. A fuel smell that lingers — whether inside the cabin, or around the car when it's parked — almost always means fuel is escaping somewhere it shouldn't. It's both a fire risk and, at minimum, fuel you're paying for and not using.

A few common sources: a fuel cap that isn't sealing properly (the simplest and cheapest cause — worth checking first), a cracked or perished fuel line, a leaking injector seal, a fault in the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system that's meant to capture fuel vapour, or in rarer cases a fuel tank itself developing a leak from corrosion or damage.

Where the smell is strongest matters. A faint smell that appears only right after refuelling and clears quickly is usually nothing to worry about. A smell that's present consistently, gets stronger over a drive, or is noticeable specifically near the engine bay or underneath the car, points to an active leak that needs prompt attention.

For anything less urgent than that, book it in for a proper fuel system check rather than waiting to see if it goes away — fuel leaks don't self-repair, and they tend to get worse rather than better over time.
